Remembering the legends!

We may have forgotten their roles, but we, all the proud Indians, must admit that we are here today, because of their excellence! This is a tribute to some of such most famous personalities of India – who stood tall amidst all the odds!

We all know about the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore – the pioneer of Bengal Renaissance. But how many of us know that he never wanted to go his school after he joined (ironically, before which, he was adamant to go to school). A person, who was the only Indian to get the Knighthood by the British, but returned it, in protest of the massacre of unarmed Indians in 1919 at Jallianwala Bagh!

Once, in the pre-independence period, a teacher in a primary school, asked his students to show their aggression in a unique way, by punching on the benches. To his surprise, a young boy continued to punch, even when he was profusely bleeding – until all others present there stopped him. Today we all know him by the name, Khudiram Bose – the young revolutionary, who challenged the British rule in his own style.

We all have studied about Lal Bahadur Shastri in our history books! The man, who after hearing a speech of Gandhiji at Varanasi, dedicated his life to the service of the country. He was the man, who dropped his surname Shrivastav, as it point towards his caste (as he was strongly against the caste system).

Next comes, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar – a philosopher, academic, writer, translator, reformer and philanthropist. The man – who used to study under lamp posts, who once left his job to get to his mother, and who earned the title "Daya-r sagar" (ocean of kindness), for his immense generosity! He was the person, who disrespected a british official by sitting with his feet kept over on the table (as he was humiliated in the same manner by the same person)!

We all know the name Raja Ram Mohan Roy – the Indian religious, social and educational reformer, who challenged traditional Hindu culture in spite o all the odds (the superstitious social system) he faced. The founder of Brahmo Samaj was deeply disturbed when his sister-in-law was forcibly burned alive by his family on her husband's funeral pyre, after which he started revolutionary campaigning against the ill practice of Sati.

Swami Vivekananda – the inspiring personality, who played a main role in founding the Ramkrishna Mission! The one – who played a pivotal role in the revival of hinduism in modern India. Perhaps best known to the world for his inspiring speech beginning with "Sisters and Brothers of America", he was the one, whose ideas stirred the conscience of many brains like Tesla, William Thompson and Professor Helmholtz.

We know about Bhagat Singh – one of the most influential revolutionary of his time! The martyr, who died after 64 days of fasting in jail, demanding equal rights for Indian and British political prisoners. He was the freedom fighter, who bravely said, "I am confident that my death will do more to smash the British Empire than my release".

And the list continues endlessly..

Today, I feel proud to born in a country, which produced such famous personalities. Not only that they are known for their role, they inspire us even in this modern world. And which is why they will always be remembered for!!

I feel proud to be an Indian!
